We are talking about a currency that\u00a0<strong>is mined with devices that make use of radio waves<\/strong>\u00a0(radio frequency).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of Helium is to form a\u00a0<strong>global wireless network<\/strong>\u00a0that can provide\u00a0<strong>coverage<\/strong>\u00a0to the largest possible area. A user with access to the wireless network can\u00a0<strong>transmit information<\/strong>\u00a0over it, connect devices and even develop\u00a0<strong>Internet of Things<\/strong>\u00a0applications. All this is achieved with a new consensus algorithm\u00a0<strong>called Proof of Coverage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"proof_of_coverage_poc\"><\/span><strong>Proof of Coverage (PoC)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p>In the Proof of Coverage we can see\u00a0<strong>3 functions of the radio devices<\/strong>. First we have the\u00a0<strong>challenger<\/strong>. Every 480 blocks or so the challenger\u00a0<strong>creates a proof<\/strong>\u00a0(randomly) for the PoC.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This test is transmitted over\u00a0<strong>Helium\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-a-peer-to-peer-network\/\">P2P network<\/a>\u00a0to a\u00a0<strong>transmitter<\/strong>. The transmitter is in\u00a0<strong>charge of sending the test<\/strong>\u00a0using its radio device. As the\u00a0<strong>radio<\/strong>\u00a0frequency has a\u00a0<strong>limited range<\/strong>, only\u00a0<strong>nearby participants<\/strong>\u00a0will be able to witness it. In this way it can be\u00a0<strong>verified<\/strong>\u00a0that the device is\u00a0<strong>geographically located<\/strong>\u00a0in a specific place,\u00a0<strong>offering wireless coverage there<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The witness of that proof<\/strong>\u00a0transmits it to the challenger who includes\u00a0<strong>the proof, already performed<\/strong>, in the<strong>\u00a0blockchain.<\/strong>\u00a0Obviously the proof has cryptography and mathematics behind it that make it verifiable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One block is mined approximately every minute. For each epoch of 30 blocks the different pools receive their rewards. There is a\u00a0<strong>pool<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>challengers<\/strong>, a pool of\u00a0<strong>transmitters<\/strong>\u00a0and a pool of\u00a0<strong>witnesses<\/strong>. And this process is only a part of mining.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We also have the\u00a0<strong>consensus group<\/strong>\u00a0(computers that are members of the P2P network that verify the blockchain) and the\u00a0<strong>devices that transmit information<\/strong>\u00a0over the wireless network. In addition, to pay\u00a0<strong>transaction fees<\/strong>\u00a0(and other services) you have to use\u00a0<strong>Data Credits<\/strong>\u00a0(DC) which are obtained by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-token-burning\/\">burning<\/a>\u00a0HNT. In each transaction, HNT is burned implicitly, you just have to have enough HNT in your wallet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For example, to\u00a0<strong>transmit<\/strong>\u00a024 bytes of\u00a0<strong>information over the wireless network<\/strong>\u00a0you have to pay 1 DC, equivalent to $0.00001. And that DC will be created by burning the equivalent amount in HNT value. The idea is similar to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-gas-in-ethereum\/\">Ethereum gas<\/a>, but with fixed price in dollar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DCs are\u00a0<strong>priced in dollars<\/strong>\u00a0through the use of an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-a-blockchain-oracle\/\">oracle<\/a>,that is, a minimized trusted third party that brings external information to the blockchain.\u00a0<strong>1 DC<\/strong>\u00a0is priced at\u00a0<strong>$0.00001<\/strong>, or in other words, $1 is equivalent to 100,000 DCs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, even though HNT has limited supply, miners (all participants in the consensus) continue to receive<strong>\u00a0new generation coins<\/strong>. If for example 100 HNT are destroyed, 100 new HNT will be created, so the supply remains limited.
