Simple yet powerful is the presentation that usually introduces UST.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With almost as many supporters and advocates as it has enemies and detractors, UST is making its way into the crypto ecosystem by dint of adoption, use cases and a huge growth in its market capitalization.<\/p>\n<p>What cannot be denied is that it has become an extremely important player. And it is for these reasons, in this article, I will go over everything about Terra\u2019s stable, decentralized and algorithmic currency.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_is_ust\"><\/span><strong>What is UST?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>UST is a stable, decentralized and algorithmic cryptocurrency created on the Terra blockchain. UST was created with the goal of spreading throughout the crypto ecosystem and becoming the most widely used stablecoin in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-terra-luna-the-blockchain-that-unites-two-worlds\/\">Terra\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0blockchain creator, Do Kwon, crypto adoption will be through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/stablecoin-what-is\/\">stable coins<\/a>\u00a0and UST was created to be the standard bearer to lead this mass adoption.<\/p>\n<p>But, now it is our turn to understand the first sentence, in which we define UST. Thus, instead of exposing our capital to currencies whose price is so volatile (as the market determines through buying and selling), with UST we can protect ourselves in a currency in which each unit will always tend to be worth one dollar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, for UST to tend to maintain this quotation, two factors are necessary:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">An asset, asset or basket of assets that give value to this stablecoin.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A mechanism to adjust or maintain the \u201cpeg\u201d or correlation with the dollar in times of volatility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first aspect gives UST its \u201cdecentralized\u201d character and the second positions it as \u201calgorithmic\u201d. Let us continue with these characteristics.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ust_the_decentralized_stablecoin\"><\/span><strong>UST, the decentralized stablecoin<br \/>\n<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>In the world of stable currencies, there are two main groups:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Centralized<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Decentralized<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The difference lies in how these currencies create or acquire the financial \u201cback up\u201d that allows them to reach 1-to-1 parity, whether with the dollar or another FIAT currency, and of course, by who is behind them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"centralized_stablecoins\"><\/span><strong>Centralized Stablecoins<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The most famous and powerful in this area are three:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-tether-usdt-the-complete-guide\/\">USDT<\/a>, of Tether Limited<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-usdc-and-how-does-it-work\/\">USDC<\/a>, created by Circle<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">BUSD, issued by Binance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This order responds to their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-market-capitalization-its-use-in-crypto\/\">market capitalization<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>With small differences in terms of the preparation of their treasury or economic backing, these currencies are centralized by companies that ensure that for each unit issued they have one dollar deposited in a bank account or an asset that represents this value. Half of the crypto library tells us that this is its weakest point, while the other half highlights this property as the most important.<\/p>\n<p>Before taking a position, we need to know how each new UST unit is created and how its mechanism works, in charge of sustaining the famous \u201cpeg\u201d or parity with the dollar.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_is_ust_created\"><\/span><strong>How is UST created?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>UST is a stable decentralized currency. Like DAI it does not require a dollar in a bank account or the permission of a company to be issued, but unlike DAI there is no variety of cryptocurrencies that, by means of blocking in a smart contract allow to create it. Here, only LUNA counts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To create a new UST it is necessary to burn the same amount, in nominals, of LUNA. What does this tongue twister mean? Examples will save us from the nitty-gritty:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>If LUNA trades at $100, to create 100 units of UST we must \u201cburn\u201d 1 unit of LUNA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>With LUNA trading at 100, to create 10 units of UST we must \u201cburn\u201d 0.1 units of LUNA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>With LUNA trading at 100, to create one unit of UST we must \u201cburn\u201d 0.01 units of LUNA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, how does this work in practice? Simple, in the main wallet of the Terra network, Terra Station, in the \u201cSwap\u201d section, we select the LUNA-UST pair and the \u201cMarket\u201d option. When the swap is performed, these LUNA will be \u201cburned\u201d or, in other words, removed from the market.<\/p>\n<p>The logical question is, how do we know that UST will always tend to be worth a dollar? Thanks to an algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_does_ust_maintain_the_value_of_a_dollar\"><\/span><strong>How does UST maintain the value of a dollar?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The manner in which UST maintains its \u201cpeg\u201d has given rise to great and lengthy discussions.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>UST and its volatility<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In the month of May 2021, when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-bitcoin\/\">bitcoin<\/a>\u00a0with its brutal fall, dragging the crypto-market into the abyss, UST lost its parity with the dollar for a few days. Users may \u201cburn\u201d their USTs to redeem them for LUNA and to supply this demand it is necessary to issue more LUNA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terra\u2019s algorithm is in charge of detecting these imbalances and propelling LUNA\u2019s issuance through the network validators. This mechanism, together with UST\u2019s price arbitrage, is what sustains its \u201cpeg\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Post-May modifications<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Following the May collapse of the previous year,\u00a0<strong>the network was upgraded to allow validators to issue LUNA more quickly in order to absorb the oversupply of USTs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To date, LUNA has been hit by sharp declines while UST has endured with minimal volatility and an effective parity with the dollar proving the value of the changes undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"luna_foundation_guard_and_its_mission\"><\/span><strong>Luna Foundation Guard and its mission<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In this sense, in January 2022, a non-profit foundation was born under the name of Luna Foundation Guard. Its mission is to protect Terra\u2019s ecosystem and work towards its expansion.<\/p>\n<p>Among its most significant measures is the creation of\u00a0<strong>a reserve of decentralized currencies<\/strong>\u00a0to support UST in the event of extremely sharp market movements. The first member of this reserve is none other than the largest and oldest decentralized currency on the market, BTC.<\/p>\n<p>With decisions like this, LFG (the foundation),<strong>\u00a0aims to take pressure off LUNA when it comes to support a \u201crun\u201d in which many users want to get rid of their USTs, adding the possibility of redeeming them for these cryptocurrencies, without compromising the main feature of UST, its decentralization and its impossibility of being censored.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, the reserve holds one trillion, or one billion, dollars in bitcoin.
