rt-postfix\">minutos<\/span><\/span><p>The imminent arrival of\u00a0<strong>Ethereum\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0network update, dubbed\u00a0<strong>ETH 2.0<\/strong>, generates great expectations among both fans and detractors of the network.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also a third group, whose expectation for the arrival of this update is based on a different justification, the completion of its\u00a0<strong>income generation mechanism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course this group is made up of\u00a0<strong>Ethereum miners.<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd the question is, once the network transforms to<strong>\u00a0Proof of Stake, where will these miners take, their computational power? What to mine after Ethereum 2.0?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this article, I will walk through the most important forward-looking alternatives for this very important set of people during\u00a0<strong>Ethereum\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0early years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_does_eth_20_affect_miners\"><\/span><strong><b>How does ETH 2.0 affect miners?<\/b><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ethereum\u00a0<\/strong>was born as a blockchain that achieves its consensus through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-proof-of-work-the-bitcoin-consensus-protocol\/\">Proof of Work<\/a>\u00a0mechanism,<strong>\u00a0therefore its normal operation and security rest on the work performed by miners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They provide their computational power to solve mathematical problems that allow the creation of new blocks in exchange for rewards, which come from the new ETH created in each block.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the beginning, in\u00a0<strong>Ethereum\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0roadmap, it was determined that the network would be transformed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-proof-of-stake-and-how-does-it-work\/\">Proof of Stake<\/a><strong>, a system by which blocks are created by validators, who instead of providing their computational power, provide a minimum amount of 32 Ethereum as a guarantee and by means of an algorithm that simulates a lottery, the production of new blocks is assigned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The miners, in order to have the necessary computational power made their corresponding investment in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-a-mining-rig\/\">hardware that allows mining Ethereum<\/a>, the well-known\u00a0<strong>GPUs<\/strong>\u00a0(Graphics Processing Units).<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0<strong>once the network passes to form its consensus via Proof of Stake, what will these miners be able to do with their hardware?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below I will review some of the most suitable options, from classic cryptocurrencies to alternative and riskier options.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"classic_mining_options\"><\/span><strong>Classic mining options<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ethereum_classic\"><\/span><strong>Ethereum Classic<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Undoubtedly, the default option. This network\u00a0<strong>was born in 2016<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>after the famous hack to the DAO<\/strong>\u00a0that divided the waters in the fledgling Ethereum network. On the one hand, those who decided to return the state of the network to the time prior to the attack and continued as the\u00a0<strong>Ethereum<\/strong>\u00a0we know today. On the other hand,\u00a0<strong>those who decided to face the consequences of the hack and continue with the network without performing the rollback (return to the previous state) and gave birth to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-ethereum-classic\/\">Ethereum Classic<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This network continues and will continue to use the Proof of Work consensus,\u00a0<strong>as the \u201cEthereum pump\u201d that determines the move to Proof of Stake was deactivated, and given its similarities to Ethereum, it is the simplest alternative for miners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The future of this network will depend on\u00a0<strong>two major issues:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The arrival of new protocols<\/strong>\u00a0and a DeFi ecosystem that justifies such an increase in computational power.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Solve the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-a-51-blockchain-attack\/\">51% attacks<\/a>, which occurred on 3 occasions during the past year.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As for the hardware needed to mine this cryptocurrency, we need\u00a0<strong>GPUs and video boards with 3 or 4 GB of memory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"litecoin\"><\/span><strong>Litecoin<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A cryptocurrency with a history, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-litecoin\/\">Litecoin<\/a>\u00a0created in 2011, is a good option to dump the computational power that Ethereum will leave unused. Born as a fork of Bitcoin,\u00a0<strong>Litecoin offers a per-block reward of 12.5 LTC, which is halved every 4 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The negative point is that this option, is that it will not be viable for those who mine Ethereum with GPUs, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/litecoin-mining-is-it-still-profitable\/\">Litecoin mining today is done with ASICs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"monero\"><\/span><strong>Monero<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Since 2014, the coin focused on the privacy of its users and their transactions has given a lot to talk about, and today it is once again an important opportunity for those who want to continue in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/how-to-mine-monero-xmr-the-complete-guide-2020\/\">the world of crypto mining<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Undoubtedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-monero\/\">Monero<\/a>\u00a0is an interesting option, its mining is performed by GPU, even with CPU, and offers a reward per block that will never be lower than 0.3 XMR and today exceeds 0.6 MXR.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"z-cash\"><\/span><strong>Z-cash<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Within the group of classics,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/zcash-zsc-complete-guide\/\">Z-Cash<\/a>\u00a0is the most current one.<br \/>\nLaunched in 2016, with features similar to Bitcoin, such as a total supply of 21 million,\u00a0<strong>it is a good option for GPU mining.<\/strong><br \/>\nAlthough mining requires a large amount of available RAM,<strong>\u00a0the rewards for block mining<\/strong>\u00a0are very attractive, reaching\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/how-to-mine-zcash-zec\/\">3,125 ZEC tokens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"image_1965194362\" class=\"img has-hover x md-x lg-x y md-y lg-y\">\n<div class=\"img-inner class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"current_mining_options\"><\/span><strong>Current mining options<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Beyond the options with the longest history, there are projects developed in recent years that propose a\u00a0<strong>Proof of Work<\/strong>\u00a0consensus for mining their blocks.<br \/>\nIn this section I will develop those that I consider the most important or with the best prospects to date.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ravencoin\"><\/span><strong>Ravencoin<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To date,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-ravencoin-rvn-and-how-does-it-work\/\">Ravencoin<\/a>\u00a0is presented as\u00a0<strong>the best alternative to Ethereum mining<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0It is a Bitcoin fork, created in 2018,<\/strong>\u00a0which was endowed with certain features of its own that differentiate it from the first cryptocurrency, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mining time of 1 minute per block.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A total supply of 21 million.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/how-to-mine-ravencoin-rvn\/\">GPU mining is possible from 4 GB<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A proprietary mining algorithm, called KAWPOW.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Unlike Bitcoin, the network has\u00a0<strong>more functionalities than sending and receiving coins<\/strong>, such as the possibility of creating other currencies, digital representation of physical goods, voting and encrypted messaging systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Currently the reward for mining a block is 5,000 RVN<\/strong>\u00a0and will be halved after the first halving of the network to be held next January.<\/p>\n<p>As of today,\u00a0<strong>the price of RVN, the network\u2019s token, is US$0.114431<\/strong>\u00a0and according to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-market-capitalization-its-use-in-crypto\/\">Market Cap<\/a>\u00a0it is ranked 99th.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ergo\"><\/span><strong>Ergo<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here we find a project, which in principle, aims at the same objectives as Ethereum,\u00a0<strong>to create a network that supports decentralized multipurpose applications.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt has interesting tokenomics, with a clear\u00a0<strong>direction towards a deflationary but sustainable policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Block mining rewards started at 75 ERG and are reduced every two years and, after 8 years, reach 0.<\/strong><br \/>\nThis last figure is important because it indicates that within the next six years or so,\u00a0<strong>ERG<\/strong>\u00a0mining will cease to produce new<strong>\u00a0ERGs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Its block generation algorithm was specifically designed to prevent\u00a0<strong>ASICS<\/strong>\u00a0mining, so it is a good opportunity for Ethereum miners, who own a\u00a0<strong>GPU with a minimum of 6 GB of memory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To boost results, it is customary for individual miners of\u00a0<strong>ERG<\/strong>, a token currently<strong>\u00a0priced at US$11.81<\/strong>, to join together to form\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-a-mining-pool-and-how-does-it-work\/\">mining pools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"conflux\"><\/span><strong>Conflux<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It is a\u00a0<strong>Proof of Work<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-the-ethereum-virtual-machine\/\">EVM<\/a>\u00a0compatible network,\u00a0<strong>which is financially supported by the Chinese government.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several platforms deployed on the network\u00a0<strong>offer zero transaction fees<\/strong>. This feature was expected to attract a large number of users, although to date this has not happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conflux,\u00a0<\/strong>with its free transactions and great speed\u00a0<strong>is still waiting for the arrival of applications that will generate a robust and capital-intensive DeFi ecosystem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The mining of this cryptocurrency, is performed by\u00a0<strong>GPUs which today requires a memory of 4 GB, but this memory requirement increases year by year, along with the complexity of the algorithms to be solved, from 1 to 1.5 GBs per year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently\u00a0<strong>the rewards per block created are 2 CFX, a token that currently has a price of about 0.32 dollars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"image_1085520288\" class=\"img has-hover x md-x lg-x y md-y lg-y\">\n<div class=\"img-inner dark\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-large size-large lazyloaded smush-detected-img smush-image-3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Que-minamos-despu%C3%A9s-de-ETH-2.0.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Que-minamos-despu\u00e9s-de-ETH-2.0.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Que-minamos-despu\u00e9s-de-ETH-2.0-300x205.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"526\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Que-minamos-despu\u00e9s-de-ETH-2.0.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Que-minamos-despu\u00e9s-de-ETH-2.0-300x205.jpg 300w\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Que-minamos-despu\u00e9s-de-ETH-2.0.jpg\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a_somewhat_utopian_but_not_impossible_idea\"><\/span><strong>A somewhat utopian, but not impossible, idea.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After having analyzed 7 different possibilities, on networks that are currently in operation, I do not want to close this article without analyzing an idea that, however far-fetched it may seem at first sight,<strong>\u00a0is still a possibility to be considered.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just as we saw the birth of Ethereum Classic in 2016 by a group of Ethereum purist miners who refused to participate or validate the famous \u201crollback\u201d, we are also facing the possibility that current Ethereum miners will take that example and go their own way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This option is viable, from a technical point of view, since the upgrade that Ethereum nodes must perform to upgrade to ETH 2.0<\/strong>, as no other option could be expected, is optional.
