When the assets were stolen, they had a value of approximately $72 million.<\/p>\n<p>However, what really defines this case is not only the theft, but\u00a0<strong>the traumatic subsequent process for the users.<\/strong>\u00a0To avoid immediate bankruptcy, the exchange distributed the losses among all its clients,\u00a0<strong>cutting their balances by 36%<\/strong>\u00a0in exchange for a debt token. The hackers used the technique of\u00a0<strong>\u00abphishing and malware\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0to obtain the access keys to the platform&#8217;s Hot Wallets.<\/p>\n<p>The platform stopped all withdrawals and deposits for a week. Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of Binance, announced that the platform would cover the losses with its own funds through its insurance fund (SAFU).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson: Even the largest platforms are not safe from hacks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"kucoin_2020_access_to_hot_wallet_keys\"><\/span><strong>KuCoin (2020): access to hot wallet keys<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In September 2020, it was the target of an attack, and the hackers managed to steal more than $281 million in coins and tokens. Furthermore, the hackers managed to obtain the keys to some of the Hot Wallets on the exchange.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29326 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5-compressed-6.jpg\" alt=\"bitnovo_bitfinex_hack_bitcoin\" width=\"768\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5-compressed-6.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5-compressed-6-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although KuCoin quickly blocked all transactions on its website, the damage had already been done.\u00a0<strong>This breach is among the largest in crypto asset history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath, KuCoin&#8217;s management team launched a comprehensive investigation.
