In finance it is the big traders and in the crypto universe the whales that often influence the behavior of securities, with the intention of making the market or a particular currency move as they wish and for their own personal gain.<\/p>\n<p>In another post we analyzed one of the most common\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/pump-and-dump-scheme-what-it-is-and-how-it-works\/\">market manipulation tactics called \u201cPump And Dump\u201d<\/a>. The buyer must buy or the seller must sell the underlying asset at the established price, regardless of the current market price on the expiration date.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority<\/strong>\u00a0(in Swedish,\u00a0<strong>Finansinspektionen<\/strong>, FI) has defined Spoofing as:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAn order placement strategy that is intended to manipulate the price of an instrument, for example, by a combination of buy and sell orders.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spoofing is also known as \u201cpainting the tape\u201d<\/strong>, an expression that dates back to when stock prices were transmitted via ticker tape. It involves traders placing buy or sell orders in the market at a specific price, but with no intention of following them.<\/p>\n<p>So, by creating a false sentiment in the market,\u00a0<strong>a trader can manipulate the actions of other market participants and change the price of a security<\/strong>. From reactions to price fluctuations, the spoofer can make a profit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"row-1104429491\" class=\"row row-collapse row-full-width frequent fluctuation of their prices.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin (BTC) is a classic example of how digital currencies can rise and fall in price from one day to the next.<\/p>\n<p>If you were already following its trend, you will have seen how in December 2017 one BTC hit a record high of over $17,000 only to plummet to less than half that value just a few weeks later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rapid fluctuations that characterize cryptocurrencies have left room for fraudulent operations,<\/strong>\u00a0such as Spoofing, whereby an attempt is made to influence and manipulate the price of a cryptocurrency by creating false orders.<\/p>\n<p>This is a tactic used mainly by big whales and algorithms that intentionally want to manipulate the market for their own personal gain.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>But how is Spoofing verified in the cryptocurrency market?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>What a user notices is\u00a0<strong>a large wall of buy or sell<\/strong>\u00a0orders that seem to convey a strong market interest in a particular cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"row-1780704485\" Which will lead many crypto holders to sell their assets for fear that the price of bitcoin will suddenly drop.<\/p>\n<p>This could be an example of\u00a0<strong>Spoofing performed by a malicious trader who places a massive sell order for a crypto asset<\/strong>\u00a0knowing that users who own a certain amount of this same asset, seeing this move as an alarm signal, will get rid of their cryptos. The\u00a0<strong>U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)<\/strong>\u00a0is an independent agency that oversees such activities in the futures markets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_protect_yourself_from_spoofing\"><\/span><b>How to protect yourself from Spoofing?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p>It is not easy to discover a spoofing attempt with cryptocurrencies and, as I have shown you in the previous paragraphs, what can make us suspect such manipulation are the buy and sell walls of the order books, although it is difficult to verify that these movements are legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the best way to protect yourself from Spoofing is to take preventive measures that will prevent you from entering into a possible fraud and becoming a victim of manipulation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">First, spoofing being a purely short-term tactic,\u00a0<strong>it can be avoided by investing for the long term<\/strong>\u00a0and avoiding day trading. There are many short-term trading firms that, for example, use software to help their traders avoid becoming victims of spoofing.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Another important measure you can take is to\u00a0<strong>avoid trading on suspicious exchanges<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, remember that if your strategy as an investor is based on holding cryptocurrencies waiting for them to rise in price in the long term as we explained in the article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitnovo.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-hold\/\">What is Holding<\/a>, it is less likely that massive buying or selling walls will make you suspicious of any attempt to manipulate the market.<\/p>\n<p>However, you have to be very careful and always keep your eyes open.
